Frozen shoulder is a condition that describes a significant functional restriction in movement of the of the shoulder joint in all directions. It usually starts with a painful phase , then gradually becomes stiffer.
It is frequently over diagnosed by both practitioners and patients. Just having restricted movement at the shoulder can be the result of a number of problems that may not be frozen shoulder.
In the early stages, Frozen shoulder it can be difficult to distinguish from other types of shoulder problems such as rotator cuff tears or subacromial impingement. However, as a rough guide, if there is catching pain only with movement over head it is more likely to be subacromial impingement, whereas painful movements below shoulder level and at start if movement, points more probably towards and early stage frozen shoulder.
